Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and is a precursor to rocksteady and reggae. Ska combines elements of mento music and calypso music from the Caribbean with jazz and rhythm and blues from the United States. The distinctive feature of this music is that the bass track runs with accentuation in upbeat rhythms. In the early 1960s, ska was the dominant musical genre in Jamaica and was popular with mods in the United Kingdom. This music was later popular among skinheads.
Ska history is generally divided into three periods: the Jamaican original ska from the 1960s (first wave), the revival of British ska 2 Tone in the late 1970s (second wave), and the third wave ska movement which began in the 1980s, and won popularity in the United States in the 1990s.
