La Grande Mêlée est un championnat virtuel où les participants incarnent le rôle d'un manager chargé de la création et de la gestion d'un groupe de rugbymen, sélectionnés à partir de l'ensemble des effectifs des clubs du Top 14.
Chacun des participants au jeu peut adhérer au mode « Classique » et/ou au mode « Mercato » dans lequel ils s'affrontent sur le marché des transferts.
À chaque journée de championnat sur La Grande Mêlée, les participants du jeu sélectionnent sur leur « Feuille de match » 15 titulaires et jusqu'à 3 remplaçants. Ils peuvent également sélectionner leur « capitaine » parmi les joueurs titulaires (ses points compteront double) et leur « SuperSub » sur le banc de touche (ses points compteront triple si et seulement si ce dernier démarre la rencontre dans la vie réelle en tant que remplaçant).
À l'issue des matchs, chaque joueur rapporte des points en fonction de ses prestations réelles. Ces points obtenus représentent la somme des points « Équipe » (au prorata de la présence réelle du joueur sur le terrain) et des points individuels qui dépendent des statistiques personnelles du joueur (essai, pénalité, placage, carton jaune, carton rouge, etc). Les participants obtiennent ainsi un total de points à chaque journée concourant ainsi au titre de manager de la journée, du mois et de l'année. De nombreux lots sont à gagner sur La Grande Mêlée !
