BIOGRAPHY
Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in Saint Ann, Jamaica, son of Norval Sinclair Marley, a white soldier, captain of the British Army and Cedella Booker, a black teenager from the north of the country. Cedella and Norval were scheduled to marry on July 9, 1944. The day after their marriage, Norval left her, but continued to give financial support to his wife and son. He seldom saw them, for he was constantly traveling. After Norval's death in 1955, Cedella Booker married Toddy Livingstone, also of Saint Ann, and moved with Marley to Trenchtown, the largest and most miserable favela in Kingston, where she was provoked and rejected by local blacks for being mulatto and short stature.
MUSICAL CAREER
The journey When he moved to Trenchtown, Bob Marley as a young man had a strong connection to music. He and his friend Bunny, the son of his stepfather, improvised canned guitars and accompanied the hits from America, particularly New Orleans, tuned into a transistorized minirrádio. They captured Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Brook Benton (one of Marley's favorites) and groups like Drifters, which were very popular in Jamaica.
By the early 1960s, the R & B movement began to decline in the United States and it became difficult to acquire records to satisfy the insatiable diet of releases that the Jamaican people demanded. The owners of Sound Systems were then forced to invest in the talent of local musicians. A song that incorporated Jamaican musical traditions with influences from R & B and big bands began to be developed at this time on the island, resulting in the vibrant and agitated ska sound. The independence of Jamaica in 1962, ceasing to be a British colony, helped to compose the moment of creation of an originally Jamaican music.
The owners of Sound Systems then became producers. They rented a two-lane studio, discovered a young man who had the talent to sing his emotions in the Kingston ghettos, and made ska records.
When Bob Marley left school at age 14, he seemed to have only one ambition: music. But much to please his mother, who feared that he would become a rude boy (as juvenile delinquents are known in Jamaica), he found himself a welder.
He spent his free time with Bunny perfecting his vocal abilities. They were aided by one of Trenchtown's most celebrated inhabitants at the time, singer Joe Higgs, who gave informal singing lessons to aspiring artists who were interested in honing their skills. It was at one of these sessions that Bob and Bunny Wailer met Peter Tosh, another young man with great ambition in music.
