Often Wind and occurring gusts of wind are an under estimation factor in accidents with mobile and/or crawler cranes. When lifting loads which are exposed to the wind, the standard design values calculated by the Crane Manufacturers (As defined in EN13000), can be significantly exceeded if the load is not considered.
The design calculation determines the allowable operating wind speed with respect of the load and its Sail Effect,
using a formula which has been developed under the guidance of EN13000. This European Standard provides one means for mobile cranes to conform with the essential health and safety requirements of the Machinery Directive
