Virtual Machine

In computing, a virtual machine is an emul ation of a computer system.
Virtual machines are based on computer architect ures and provide func tionality of a physical computer. Their implem entations may involve special ized hardware, software, or a combinat ion.
There are different kinds of virtual machines, each with different functions:
1) System virtual machines provide a subs titute for a real machine. They provide func tionality needed to execu te ent ire operating system s. A hyper visor uses native executi on to share and manage hardware, allowing for multiple enviro virtual machine nments which are isola ted from one anot her, yet exist on the same physical mac hine. Modern hypervis ors use hardware-assisted virtu alization, virtualiza tion-specific hardware, pr imarily from the host CPUs.
2) Process virtual ma chines are des igned to execute com puter programs in a platform-indep endent envir onment.
