Nabi adalah seseorang dengan jenis kelamin pria yang mendapat wahyu dari Allah SWT namun tidak wajib disebarkan kepada orang lain.
Rasul adalah seseorang dengan jenis kelamin laki-laki yang mendapatkan wahyu dari Allah SWT dan memiliki kewajiban untuk menyebar luaskan wahyu tersebut.
Sebenarnya jumlah Nabi dan Rasul sangatlah banyak. Berdasarkan salah satu hadist dikatakan bahwa jumlah nabi ada 124 ribu orang, sebagai berikut :
Dari Abi Zar ra bahwa Rasulullah SAW bersabda ketika ditanya tentang jumlah para nabi, “(Jumlah para nabi itu) adalah seratus dua puluh empat ribu (124.000) nabi.” “Lalu berapa jumlah Rasul di antara mereka?” Beliau menjawab, “Tiga ratus dua belas(312)” (HR. At-Turmuz)
Dari sekian banyak nabi dan rasul, namun yang harus kita imani sebagaimana yang dijelaskan di dalam Al-Qur’an yaitu hanya 25 Nabi atau Rasul, dan ini menjadi salah satu Rukun Iman yang keempat dalam agama islam yaitu Percaya kepada para nabi dan para rasul.
25 nabi dan rasul tersebut adalah:
